Despite deadline extension: City of Bocholt advises not to put off property tax declarations for too long

The finance ministers of the federal states recently decided that property owners now have until 31 January 2023 to submit their property tax return. However, the deadline extension should not be a reason to put off submitting the necessary information to the tax office.

Bocholt's mayor Thomas Kerkhoff and treasurer Jennifer Schlaghecken are appealing to all Bocholt property owners to submit the declaration for the determination of the property tax value - the assessment declaration - to their responsible tax office in good time: "Our advice: Take advantage of the help offered by the tax authorities and submit the declaration as soon as possible."

The declaration to determine the property tax value is a declaration of assessment in accordance with the German Fiscal Code. This means that taxpayers must submit this declaration. Failure to do so could be unnecessarily expensive. This is because, in extreme cases, the declaration can be enforced with a penalty payment. If the declaration is not submitted or is submitted late, the tax office can initially estimate the data and set an individual late payment surcharge. However, the obligation to submit a declaration of assessment remains in place even after an estimate.

City of Bocholt does not provide any information

The city of Bocholt does not provide any information as part of the submission of property tax returns. The respective revenue-neutral assessment rate will only be communicated to the North Rhine-Westphalian municipalities in the course of 2024. With this information, the municipalities are then in a position to forecast future revenue from property tax and, taking into account their financial requirements, to specifically determine and decide on the assessment rate required for 2025.
