VHS Lecture: New Zealand & South Pacific in 3D - Eight Months at the Most Beautiful End of the World

On Wednesday, 8 March 2023, the VHS Bocholt-Rhede-Isselburg, the Stadtsparkasse Bocholt and the BBV Media Group jointly invite you to an event highlight. The 3D photographer Stephan Schulz will be making a guest appearance in Bocholt on his tour and will be presenting his latest and most elaborate travel documentary to date under the title "New Zealand & South Pacific - Eight Months at the Most Beautiful End of the World". The venue is the auditorium of the Bocholt Comprehensive School, Rheinstr.4.

On the road for months

The adventurer and professional photographer Stephan Schulz spent eight intensive months on the road in New Zealand and the South Pacific for his documentary. He hiked through rainforests and snowy mountains, paddled along dreamlike coasts and crawled into mystical caves. He dived the famous Milford Sound and came face to face with a giant sperm whale.

He also photographed New Zealand from the air by helicopter, drone and parachute. Underwater, he explored coral-covered drop-offs and ventured into the diversity of kelp forests off the Poor Knight Islands. In New Zealand's South Pacific environment, he visited the wildlife paradises of the sub-Antarctic islands with their huge penguin colonies, elephant seals and albatrosses. In Vanuatu, he met descendants of cannibals and documented the Naghol festival, where brave men throw themselves headfirst from a high tower in a breakneck tribal ritual. And he stood on an active volcano, from whose crater lava is ejected every few minutes with a deafening thunder.

In his presentation, Stephan Schulz offers his audience the opportunity to immerse themselves in an overwhelming 3D rush of images and reveals a vivid visual experience that is unique in the field of live reportage in the German-speaking world. For the optical effects of this lecture, special circular 3D glasses are required; these can be purchased on site on the evening for 1.30 €.

The event starts at 7:30 pm, admission from 7 pm. At the box office, adults pay 9,-€ / pupils and trainees 7,50€. Advance tickets are reduced by 1,-€, BBV subscribers receive a further reduction of 1,-€. Advance ticket sales at BBV, Europaplatz 24-28, at the VHS office in Bocholt, Stenerner Weg 14a, the VHS branches in Rhede and Isselburg or as an online reservation.

The person

Stephan Schulz has been fascinated by 3D and stereo images since childhood. Curiosity about foreign countries and cultures joined him in many ways.

Already on his first journeys to Pakistan and Bolivia in the mid-1990s, he captured the stories and experiences in spatial images. This not only allows details to be experienced as they can only be seen on location, but through special disciplines such as macro or large-base stereo photography, images are created that would not be perceptible to the naked eye in this way. His most motivating concern during the presentation is to share what he has experienced with his audience in the best image and sound quality and to observe the reactions to the "mid-thin experience".
