This is how the training works

Training as a geomatics technician lasts three years and is mainly completed in the department of land and soil management at the city of Bocholt. In the first year of training, the theoretical training is supported by attendance at the Max-Born-Berufskolleg in Recklinghausen once a week together with the surveying technician training course (joint qualification). In the second and third years of training, a total of six block teaching periods are then held exclusively for the geomatics technician at the Heinrich Hertz European College in Bonn (specific qualification geomatics technician).

The first year of training includes:

  • Overview of surveying calculations, methods and equipment
  • Carrying out position and height surveys using various methods
  • Regulations for the production and continuation of maps, plans and continuation sketches
  • Overview of the various mapping and coordinate systems
  • Construction of a graphic data processing system
  • Transfer, backup and correction of different data
  • Checking geodata for topicality, accuracy, completeness and plausibility
  • Calculation of position, height, areas and volumes
  • Representation of geodata in plans, maps and data models

The second and third years of training include

  • Preparation, visualisation and presentation of geodata in different geoinformation systems
  • Acquisition of factual data and presentation on maps and plans with spatial reference
  • Preparation in different formats for e.g. print products or web applications
  • Research, evaluation, documentation of data and information
  • Determination of shape, size and position of objects from aerial and panoramic images
  • Consideration of topological references and the use of logical and spatial operators
  • Graphical design of maps and mastering the communication and presentation of complex spatial issues

Possible areas of employment after the training

After completing vocational training, geomatics technicians find employment opportunities in

  • Public services in the fields of surveying, cadastre and geoinformation,
  • companies in the fields of geodata services, geography, information technology and surveying or
  • in energy and utility companies.

In addition, there are various further training opportunities after training

  • Study geodesy, geoinformatics and surveying
