1,000 daffodils for the Rossendale promenade

German-British Society Bocholt celebrates its 40th anniversary next year

1000 daffodil bulbs planted the board members of the German-British Society Bocholt e.V. now at the Rossendale-Promenade. With this action they want to ring in their 40th anniversary next year. The yellow Easter flakes will bloom in spring. In doing so, they will present a similar picture to that which is usual at this time in Rossendale, Bocholt's English twin town.

"We would like to symbolize the solidarity between Bocholt and Rossendale," says Andreas Becker, chairman of the German-British Society Bocholt e.V.. Both cities are celebrating the 70th anniversary of the twinning this year.

Second campaign after 15 years

Already on the occasion of the 25th anniversary, the members of the society planted hundreds of daffodil bulbs along the Rossendale promenade. Over the years, these disappeared more and more. Photos taken along the promenade by honorary chairman Karl Gerd Geßner in March 2022 showed exactly where the gaps were. These have now been filled with new bulbs, so that next spring yellow daffodils will once again decorate the promenade throughout.

"Manpower" in demand

Maria Andiel and Karl Gerd Geßner, Andreas Becker, Marietta Borgert, Karl-Hein Raab, Matthias Mönning and Barbara Pfeiffer took part in the current planting campaign. They had to face the challenge of planting the bulbs in the hard bank. Due to the lowered Aa, the bank area was very dry and the planting required real "manpower". After an hour, however, all the bulbs were sunk. A particularly large number were planted at the Rossendale bench, which has been on the promenade for several years.

"Friends of Bocholt" turn 40 years old

Interested young people watched the planting action of the German-British Society. Gladly Marietta Borgert and Maria Andiel from the board explained that the daffodils, which are called "Daffodils" in England, grow wild there along the roadsides and paths. They will also be seen everywhere in the English twin town in spring. Their blossoming ends the winter and invites to new activities. The German-British Society Bocholt is therefore pleased to celebrate the round birthday together with its partner society, the "Friends of Bocholt" in Rossendale. They too will be 40 years old next year.
