Action day on 21 June 2026 at the Crafts Museum invites you to get actively involved
The Bocholt City Museum invites the public to a day of action on Sunday, 21 June 2026, in the Crafts Museum. Between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., interested parties can actively participate in the design of the upcoming special exhibition "Schwere Schritte. Bocholt stories of flight and new beginnings". At the centre of the action is the joint twisting of ropes, which will later become a central component of the exhibition architecture.
The planned special exhibition, which will be on display from 6 August to 26 November 2026 in the annex of the Lernwerk (appendix), tells the story of people in Bocholt who experienced flight, displacement and arriving in a new environment. The focus is on personal eyewitness stories that visualise individual experiences of loss, uncertainty, hope and new beginnings. The exhibition shows that flight and migration are not just global issues, but also characterise Bocholt's past and present.
"The aim of the day of action is to see the exhibition as a joint endeavour that is supported by the city society", explains Lisa Resing, Director of the Bocholt City Museum. On 21 June 2026, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., ropes will be twisted together in the Bocholt Crafts Museum, which will later form part of the exhibition architecture around the stories told by contemporary witnesses. "The jointly produced ropes form a deliberate contrast to the rest of the design and are far more than a purely design element. They symbolise connection, cohesion and the participation of many people in the life stories told", says Resing. With their own hands, they create a visible sign that behind every difficult step there is also hope for a new beginning.
The city of Bocholt and the city museum are calling on all interested parties to take advantage of this opportunity to combine the experience of craftsmanship with cultural remembrance work. The project makes it clear that the reappraisal of the city's history becomes particularly lively and approachable when many people get actively involved. Admission and participation in the day of action are free of charge.
