Vienna in the post-war period: the four occupying powers have divided up the city and the black market is flourishing. One of the most mysterious racketeers is Harry Lime, who invites his childhood friend and writer Rollo Martins to Vienna. But when he arrives, he is only in time for Lime's funeral - he was allegedly the victim of a car accident. But Martins does not believe this version of Lime's death and begins to investigate.
