City Museum again offers free guided tours of the City Forest Camp

Interesting history of the city forest camp // Five dates between 15.07.2023 and 03.10.2023 // Registration now open

The Bocholt municipal forest camp is evidence of one of the most eventful chapters in Bocholt's municipal history. As the site of the Austrian Legion, a prisoner of war camp during World War II, and its later use as a "Palestine Transit Camp", the site still tells stories of political events of the 20th century, of the life of the people of Bocholt during World War II and its aftermath.

The Bocholt City Museum presented the history of the city forest camp in 2021 with a large special exhibition. In the course of this exhibition, guided tours in the former camp area were conceived. "Since then, the offer has been accepted with great interest," explains museum director Lisa Resing, "This year, too, we have already received many requests for new dates. We are pleased to finally be able to meet them," she continues.

This year, the City Museum invites you to five free public guided tours between 15.07.2023 and 03.10.2023 in the former Stadtwaldlager area. Together with Werner Loock, you will follow in the footsteps of the camp's eventful history.

With the help of historical images and interesting scientific findings, life in and around the camp will be clearly explained to its inmates and the people of Bocholt at the time. A close look is taken at the first camp inhabitants, National Socialists of the so-called Austrian Legion (1935-1938), as well as at the living conditions of the numerous prisoners of war who were imprisoned in the Stadtwald camp between 1939 and 1944.

All public tours are free of charge. However, prior registration is requested. Appointments can be reserved here (click here).
