Stories about life on the border

German-Dutch regulars' table visits Borderland Museum in Dinxperlo

The German-Dutch regulars' table now met in the renovated Borderland Museum Dinxperlo (Netherlands). During the guided tour, the participants gained insights into the eventful history of the border neighbours.

The museum currently houses an exhibition on "60 Years of the Market in Dinxperlo" and a permanent exhibition on "Life on the Border". Numerous exhibits show, for example, the ways in which the inhabitants of the border region smuggled goods. There were almost no limits to their ingenuity back then, so customs officials had to adapt their strategies again and again.

The exhibits impressively show how much easier the movement of goods within Europe has been since the EU's internal market came into being 30 years ago. In addition to the free movement of goods, the EU internal market also stands for the free movement of services, capital and people for the residents of the European Union.

The course participants, who have lived in the border region for more than 30 years, enriched the tours with their personal stories.

Next event on 17 August

The regulars' table, a cooperation event between the Adult Education Centre, the Europe Direct Office in Bocholt and the City of Aalten, meets regularly to exchange information in German and Dutch. The next regulars' table will take place on 17 August at 7 pm at the Montferland winery in Gendringen with a guided tour and tasting. Interested persons over the age of 18 can register. For information call 02871 953-1287 or www.bocholt.de/international. The personal contribution to the event is 22.50 euros.
