The Measured Man - The Special Film

Historical drama// Tuesday 22 August// 8 pm// Kinodrom// 6 euros // Culture pass possible// A German ethnology doctoral student witnesses the genocide of the Herero and Nama in Namibia at the beginning of the 20th century.

Portrait photo of the Herero interpreter in a Biedermeier dress with a headdress made of the same red-patterned fabric. The film title is written over her face in large old-looking yellow lettering.

In the course of the "German Colonial Exhibition", some Herero and Nama from the colony "German Southwest Africa" come to Berlin in 1896. The students, who are taught according to the evolutionist race theory that was common at the time, are supposed to measure and observe the guests in detail. This is how the doctoral student Alexander Hoffmann meets the interpreter of the group, Kezia Kambazembi. He develops a great interest in the Herero and Nama and begins to question the racist theories. Under the protection of the imperial army, he travels through Namibia after the warlike uprising and collects artefacts and artifacts left behind for the Berlin Ethnological Museum. Secretly, the student continues to search for evidence for his counter-thesis and for the interpreter Kezia. He becomes part of the genocide against the Herero and Nama and crosses his own moral boundaries.

116 minutes, Director: Lars Kraume
