Bocholt City History Discussion Group

Politics on the table on All Saints' Day

2023.1 Portrait Maria Tekülve

On Friday, 29 September 2023 at 6.30 p.m., the City Archive and the Adult Education Centre Bocholt-Rhede-Isselburg invite you to the Bocholt City History Discussion Group in the Media Centre (Alter Bahnhof) at Hindenburgstraße 5. The guest will be the author and geographer Maria Tekülve. She will read from her novel "Abschied von Wiesken. Four generations of a Münsterland farming family 1850-2020". In the comprehensive family epic spanning several epochs from the heyday of the imperial era, the devastating world wars, through the so-called "modern age" to the prosperous present, it is always about big politics on a small scale: whether collections in church, the clearing of forests and hedgerows, the women's egg money. The focus of the evening is on the time around 1970, a phase not only of cultural upheaval. When relatives from the city and the village drove to the farm for the grand visit, everything culminated at the latest with the men's cream. The full bowls in her hands, the mother pleaded, "Just no politics!" It helped little - and that was a good thing.

The author, Maria Tekülve, grew up in Münsterland, studied and earned her doctorate in geography, sociology and agricultural economics in Göttingen as well as in Berlin, where she now lives. She spent her professional life in development cooperation. Maria Tekülve will read in four parts; in between and afterwards there will be opportunities for discussion: Where, what and with whom are we debating today? The moderator will be the new city archivist Renate Volks-Kuhlmann.

The Bocholt City History Discussion Group is a cooperation between the Adult Education Centre Bocholt-Rhede-Isselburg and the City Archive: Historians and local historians present their research topics and then engage in discussion with the audience. The event takes place in cooperation with the Society for Historical Regional Studies of the Western Münsterland.
