Pedelec in road traffic: city offers training for senior citizens

Safe and mobile in old age, how older people benefit from pedelecs and what to bear in mind

More and more senior citizens are discovering the pedelec - also known colloquially as an e-bike - as a practical and comfortable means of transport for everyday life and leisure. Together with the Borken district police, the city of Bocholt is now offering training courses on the subject.

Electric bicycles enable mobility even in old age, increase quality of life and contribute to active health promotion. However, the trend is also leading to an increase in accidents.

The number of road accidents involving pedelecs has risen significantly in recent years. According to data from the Federal Statistical Office, around 45 per cent of all pedelec riders involved in fatal accidents in 2024 were over 65 years old. The most common causes of accidents are misjudgement, balance problems and a lack of experience with the higher speed and weight of the bikes.

For this reason, the city of Bocholt's senior citizens' office, in cooperation with the police, is offering a free training course, consisting of theory and practice, for more safety in road traffic. The training will take place on 29 July 2025 at 10 a.m. in the Lernwerk, Industriestr. 1, 46395 Bocholt. After the theory, practical tips will be given on the Kubaai site before driving to particularly prominent locations in Bocholt. The event ends at around 12 noon.

Please register at the city of Bocholt's senior citizens' office at seniorenbüro(at)bocholt(dot)de or by telephone on 02871/953 2342.
