Sidewalk along "Extrablatt" now also free for cyclists

The wide sidewalk on Schanze in the direction of St. Georg-Platz, along the café "Extrablatt, is now also open for cyclists. A sign points out this special feature.

Normally, sidewalks may not be used by cyclists. However, it is possible under traffic law to allow exceptions.

The city of Bocholt has decided to do this at this point, since the path has apparently long been used by many cyclists as a convenient alternative to get quickly to Georg-Platz without having to sort into the flowing traffic or wait for the traffic lights to change. The administration considers this to be acceptable, especially since the sidewalk at this point, with a width of 2.50 meters, offers enough space for both pedestrians and cyclists without them obstructing each other. The short stretch is easy to see, walking speed and mutual consideration apply. The bike lane is an additional service - cyclists can of course use the road as an alternative.

A bicycle clearance for the sidewalk on the opposite side of the bridge is not planned. The traffic situation here is to be evaluated differently in terms of traffic law and is too confusing.
