Digital parking: 74 more sensors installed on Theodor-Heuss-Ring

Expansion of the municipal sensor network // 74 parking spaces on Theodor-Heuss-Ring fitted with sensors // Occupancy data to be available online in future

The city council has now also fitted the car park to the west of Theodor-Heuss-Ring with 74 smart ground sensors. Following the launch on Dietrichstraße, this will soon see the second site for digital parking management come into operation. The systems will monitor parking space occupancy in real time from now on.

With work underway on the Theodor-Heuss-Ring, the city's monitoring network continues to expand as planned. Following the recent installation by a specialist contractor of the first parking sensors in the areas between Dietrichstraße and Hermannstraße, a further car park within the ring has now been fitted with sensors. The 74 sensors installed there detect arriving and departing vehicles via integrated magnetic field sensors. The built-in batteries ensure the system will operate for several years.

The occupancy data collected at both locations will in future be fed into a central data network. The system continuously updates the occupancy status of the parking spaces so that road users can access the information at any time. The plan is to make this information available via the city's website and through mobile apps. The city council is thus responding to the traffic caused by people searching for parking spaces in the city centre, which it hopes to reduce by providing targeted advance information.

""Those who can view available parking spaces digitally in advance will find a space more quickly and relieve the streets of unnecessary traffic caused by people searching for a space"," says Hany Omar, Chief Digital Officer for the city of Bocholt. ""The trial, now underway at two locations, is providing us with practical insights to help us reliably develop the digital parking guidance system for the entire city."" The project is part of the local authority's digital strategy. In addition to traditional parking spaces, the city is also trialling data integration with electric car charging points to highlight blocked charging bays where no charging is currently taking place.
