The copper beech is the "Tree of the Year 2022

Annual planting campaign since 1989 // Tree can live 300 years

It can grow up to 45 meters high and is considered the "waterworks of the forest": the copper beech. This year, the tree is the "Tree of the Year". One specimen has been standing on the meadow of the annual trees on Böggeringstraße since this week.

As early as 1990, the copper beech was the "Tree of the Year", chosen annually by the Tree of the Year Board of Trustees. It is considered the most common deciduous tree in Germany - and is seen by many experts as a beacon of hope for the forest in climate change.

The reason for this is that the copper beech is very adaptable and thrives in many places. The copper beech is known as the "waterworks of the forest" because precipitation can run off into the forest floor during the winter on its smooth tips and trunk.

The copper beech (Fagus sylvatica) belongs to the beech family and is common in Europe. Healthy copper beeches can live up to 300 years, their flowering season is April and May.

The sponsorship for the annual tree this year is taken over by the company Logata Digital Solutions GmbH from Bocholt. On Monday, the tree was symbolically planted by Mayor Thomas Kerkhoff and Bernd Decressin, managing director of Logata Digital Solutions, city building councilor Daniel Zöhler and members of the city's environmental committee.

To the "Tree of the Year

Every year since 1989, a tree has been chosen as Tree of the Year by the Dr. Silvius Wodarz Foundation - the copper beech is now the 34th annual tree to be planted in Bocholt. Last year it was the holly.
