Online discussion: Where does the economy currently stand in Europe?

Interactive online discussion event on 27 June 2023 at 7 pm // Registration is requested: europe-direct(at)bocholt(dot)de

The EUROPE DIRECT of the City of Bocholt, together with EUROPE DIRECT Duisburg-Niederrhein, EUROPE-DIRECT Steinfurt and Europa-Union NRW, invites to an online discussion with experts on 27 June on the topic "Next Generation EU: Where does the economy currently stand in Europe?". All interested citizens can participate free of charge.

Background

In Europe, one crisis seems to follow another: After the whole world suffered from Corona for years, the war in Ukraine added an unprecedented energy crisis in Europe. Gas was not only threatening to run out over the winter. Both posed extreme challenges to economies across Europe.

EU response

The EU and its member states responded massively to these challenges. With the EU's reconstruction fund, not only billions, but more than a trillion euros were put in hand. This is a novelty, among other things, because it is the first time that the EU has taken on debt on a large scale, for which all EU member states have to pay proportionately. The "Next Generation EU" construction plan ties the use of these funds to strict criteria that are intended to transform the economy and society and create a "Europe for all".

Outlook

What has happened so far and where do we go from here? Will the EU economy recover with the measures and emerge stronger from the crises or will it merely fall from one shock to the next? Can the ever new debts be paid off again or will the EU develop into a "debt union"? How do pandemics and wars change the economy and especially the societies of the 27 EU countries and can the EU still hold its own in the future in comparison to the large economic areas such as China and the USA?

Who speaks?

Our experts Jürgen Matthes from the Institute of the German Economy (IW Köln) and Prof. Siebo Janssen look forward to your questions and opinions. The format of the event is designed to give you the opportunity to participate at any time with questions and contributions. The event will be moderated by Jochen Leyhe.
