Lecture: On the tracks of Superman

On Thursday, 20 April, a free lecture entitled "On the trail of Superman - Moses, Ancient Heroes and Outlaw Cowboys/Judaism, Musclemen" will be held at 7 pm in the Media Centre (Alter Bahnhof) by the Volkshochschule Bocholt-Rhede-Isselburg.

Everyone knows a cinema film or a comic book with a superhero. The superpowers range from flying, speed, strength, laser beams to invisibility and fire. What fascinates us about them? Where does the new hype come from? As the prototype of all superheroes, this lecture will use Superman as an example to show which discourses of the early 20th century he is representative of, what influence he had on fascism and how the superhero cult can still be a sign of peace today.

About the speaker

Dr. Torsten Caeners, born in 1976, teaches linguistics and literature at the University of Duisburg-Essen. In particular, he researches and teaches as a cultural scientist on popular culture topics, especially the superhero discourse in film and TV.
