Stop action: Pupils make traffic offenders think twice

Pupils in Bocholt have once again actively campaigned for greater road safety. This year, pupils from Clemens-Dülmer-Schule took part in the stop-and-start campaign that has been taking place for many years. On Schwartzstraße, they distributed "thought and thank-you notes".

Many pupils from the Clemens Dülmer School took part this year

What was special about this year was that it was triggered by a request from the pupils at the children's conferences, which took place at all Bocholt primary schools and the Bischof-Ketteler-Schule from January to June last year.

At the children's conferences, the pupils had the opportunity to express their wishes and ideas. They were particularly concerned about safety on school routes, which is why they called for more speed checks.

This idea was taken up: The Department of Public Order (FB 20) together with the Borken district police have now carried out a stop campaign on the school route at Clemens-Dülmer-Schule. Road users were kindly reminded of their driving behaviour by the children. Speeding drivers were given a warning, exemplary drivers a thank-you note.

"We can already see that it has a completely different effect when children point out their behaviour to drivers, admonish them or thank them", says Wiebke Schmitz from the Youth and Family Department, which organises the children's conferences.

Support from Stadtsparkasse Bocholt

This year's stop campaign is once again supported by Stadtsparkasse Bocholt. Julia Bergerfurth presented a symbolic cheque for 2,400 euros for campaigns to improve road safety.
