Places with history

Around it there is the defence town of Bredevoort and a small number of villages, such as Barlo, De Heurne, Haart, Lintelo and IJzerlo. The municipality of Aalten has a rich history, which you can learn about in the Aaltender museums, in the Borderland Museum Dinxperlo, in the Book Town Bredevoort or on a historical bicycle or walking tour.

Leisure and recreation

Aalten also has a wide range of camping and other overnight accommodation. There are plenty of recreational opportunities in the beautiful green surroundings. Aalten and Dinxperlo have a varied range of shopping facilities. The Dinxperlo district in particular, which shares the national border between Germany and the Netherlands in the Bocholt district of Suderwick, is a popular destination for German day tourists. For example, the weekly market on Fridays and the annual border market on Ascension Day always attract large numbers of visitors.

Probably the best-known resident of Aalten is Angus Young, guitarist of the Australian band AC/DC.
