Fiction & Fake

Reading on the terms - with Klaus Cordes

The event at GrenzBlickAtelier on 19 August revolves around the themes of "Fiction & Fake". Truth falls by the wayside... Why not? In fiction - from Homer's "Odyssey" to Eugen Ruge's "Pompeii" - fantasy comes into its own. The fantastic is imagined, put on stage and screen. What about fiction today? Has everything already been told? Truth falls by the wayside... Bad enough! Fake is spreading, Deep Fake amazes and is considerably better received than the truth. Will we no longer be able to distinguish "alternative facts" from facts in the future?

Fake and increasingly deep fake are penetrating our visual worlds more and more. On the other hand, less and less original fiction is being created, freely invented. Autofiction in literature is more navel-gazing than looking into the open. The film industry is working its fingers to the bone on biopics. The mainstream in the visual arts eschews narrative. The stage victory of chat-GPT finally puts an end to fiction, as AI combines the existing in a clichéd way. The battle of fake versus fiction ends with a knockout for the AI.

In a short presentation, Klaus Cordes introduces the terms, contrasts them with each other, relates them to his mail art collages and puts forward theses that could hopefully lead to a lively discussion.
