Excursion: Europe's largest recycling plant Lippewerk in Lünen

On Tuesday 16 September, EUROPE DIRECT Bocholt, together with the Europa-Union Bocholt e.V. and the BELC network, is offering an excursion to Lünen to Europe's largest recycling plant, the Lippe-Werk.

20250916 Excursion Lippe Plant

With an area of over 200 hectares, the Lippe Plant is Europe's largest centre for industrial recycling. Located on the site of a former aluminium plant in Lünen, the recycling park houses facilities for the processing and recycling of gypsum from flue gas desulphurisation plants, chemicals, wood, plastics, old electrical appliances and non-fossil fuels, for example.

According to the company, around 900,000 tonnes of recyclable products leave the Lippe Plant every year - including products from binder production, biodiesel, certified compost for landscaping and plastic granulates for industry. According to the company, these recycling services contribute to saving 488,000 tonnes of CO2.

Many citizens and companies separate waste and some of them are now experts in doing so. Nevertheless, the topic remains rather abstract in everyday life. What happens after the waste or recycling material has been collected? And what happens to the large quantities of industrial waste that are produced every day? On 16 September 2025, guests on the excursion will follow the path of industrial waste, as well as plastic and other materials, and see how the material is transformed from waste into a reusable raw material. The excursion starts at around 13:00 at Bocholt railway station in Hindenburgstraße 1 in Bocholt. The planned return is around 18:30. Registration is possible under the following link:
