300 new trees for the Bocholt urban area

The city of Bocholt has started replanting throughout the city today. A total of around 300 climate-resilient trees and 2,000 native shrubs will be planted. The aim is to adapt the tree population to the changed climatic conditions and provide food for native insects and birds.

The waste disposal and service company of the city of Bocholt is carrying out replanting throughout the city during the current planting period. Several hundred new trees are being planted in the ground. When selecting the species, the city pays attention to climate resilience and site suitability. As the changed weather conditions require plants that can tolerate longer periods of drought and higher temperatures, appropriately adapted varieties were selected. These include the field maple, the white mulberry, the sweet chestnut, the silver lime and the Bur oak. These species are considered hardy and serve to secure the urban tree population in the long term.

"The requirements for urban green maintenance have changed considerably in recent years," explains Sven van den Berg, Head of Green Space and Road Maintenance at the Bocholt waste disposal and service company, who planned and is now implementing the planting with his colleagues, "it is no longer just about appearance, but also about strategic adaptation to changing climatic conditions with increasing dry periods."

In addition to the tree planting, around 2,000 native trees are being planted in various urban areas. This reforestation serves local nature conservation. The newly planted shrubs and bushes provide a source of food and a habitat for numerous native birds and insects.
