City cycling: Bocholt in second place nationwide

Bocholt - Bocholt was once again able to secure second place nationwide in the CITY CYCLING 2023 campaign. As in the previous year, Bocholt was only beaten by Rheine in the category up to 100,000 inhabitants.

In Bocholt, more than 2,600 citizens took part in the campaign, in which all kilometres cycled are recorded over a set period of time. This was by far the highest number of participants since the first year in 2017. Bocholt was also able to significantly increase the number of kilometres cycled: While it was 472,600 kilometres in 2022, the people of Bocholt covered more than 639,000 kilometres this year.

Nevertheless, the gap to the first-placed city of Rheine is large: there, an impressive 892,000 kilometres were covered during the campaign period - more than 250,000 kilometres more than in Bocholt. "We naturally congratulate Rheine on this proud achievement," says Bocholt's mayor Thomas Kerkhoff. He thanks all Bocholt residents who took part in the campaign this year and encourages them to take part next year. "Second place nationwide is a special honour for Bocholt as a cycling city," says Kerkhoff. "It impressively demonstrates the special importance of the bicycle in our city and the region: as a company car and leisure companion - and for a leisurely ride at the weekend." Bocholt's city planning officer Daniel Zöhler accepted the award in Cologne on Tuesday on behalf of the city of Bocholt.

Successful teams at the start

The CITY CYCLING campaign took place this year from 1 to 21 May. The most successful team were the cyclists from the Liebfrauen parish. The team covered 52,945 kilometres - around 8.2 percent of the total number of kilometres cycled. The team from Bocholt's Mariengymnasium was also very successful: the pupils and teachers cycled more than 31,700 kilometres (approx. 5 percent).

An overview of all the results can be found on the campaign website.

About the CITY CYCLING campaign

The CITY CYCLING campaign aims to highlight the benefits of cycling and contribute to climate protection through competition between cities and municipalities. The aim of the campaign is for more people to "permanently switch from car to bike", according to the campaign's website. Participation by local politicians is also intended to draw attention to the needs of cyclists.
