The CITY CYCLING campaign is still running until the end of September - Bocholt is currently at the top of its category! More than 3000 cyclists from Bocholt took part in the nationwide initiative in 178 teams and together cycled an impressive 745,492 kilometres. This means that Bocholt is still in first place in the size category for 50,000 to 99,999 inhabitants. Mayor Thomas Kerkhoff presented certificates and prizes to cyclists with outstanding achievements.
This year's CITY CYCLING period took place in Bocholt from 1 to 21 May 2025. Mayor Thomas Kerkhoff has now presented certificates and prizes to cyclists with outstanding achievements.
Mariengymnasium as the strongest team for Bocholt
Mariengymnasium once again stood out in particular, clearly surpassing its previous year's results. The school had by far the largest and most active team and set several records, which have now been honoured. Mayor Thomas Kerkhoff presented two certificates to headmistress Ruth-Maria Sonntag and the school's CITY CYCLING coordinator Christoph Hermann together with Dave Welling, head of the building department, and Sascha Terörde from the city of Bocholt's climate protection department.
Firstly, there was the gold award as the "Biggest Team" of this year's campaign in Bocholt with around 430 active cyclists - more than twice as many as the next largest team with 180 participants. The second gold award went to the "Strongest team performance". With 73,657 kilometres and a total of 9,133 rides, Mariengymnasium contributed almost 10 percent to the city's overall result.
The bronze award went to class 9c (now 10c), which achieved a total of 6,177 kilometres with an outstanding 221 kilometres per participant. Class 6b (now 7b) was honoured with a silver certificate for a performance of 6,412 km. "Sometimes even the youngest can be the greatest", announced Mayor Thomas Kerkhoff to the winning class: With 7,687 km and 175 km per participant, class 5a (now 6a) received a certificate with the gold award.
"We are incredibly proud of the achievement of this school community. This result proves that together we can make a major contribution to climate protection and enjoy being active", emphasised Mayor Thomas Kerkhoff.
Prize draw among all CITY CYCLING participants
In addition, a total of 15 prizes were raffled off among all of the 3,053 participants in this year's CITY CYCLING campaign in Bocholt. BEW Bocholter Energie- und Wasserversorgung and the Gilde Group contributed vouchers worth 50 euros, while bicycle bags and tool sets with an air pump were also up for grabs. Mayor Thomas Kerkhoff, Jürgen Elmer (Managing Director of BEW) and Josef Tewinkel (Gilde Group) presented the prizes to the lucky winners at the end of August.
