Planting on the nationwide "Tree Day" // City councillor takes over sponsorship
The red oak is the tree of the year 2025. A specimen of the tree, which is becoming increasingly important in times of climate change, can now be found on Bocholt's "Path of Annual Trees" in the Feldmark. Bocholt CDU city councillor Bernhard Lübberdink and his partner Gisela Giesing have taken over the sponsorship of the annual tree.
He has always had a special relationship with trees, says Bernhard Lübberdink. As a city councillor, he is a member of the Committee for Environment and Greenery and has already campaigned for the preservation of trees in the city on several occasions.
Some time ago, he asked the Department of Mobility and Environment whether he could sponsor a tree - and this year it worked out. "I'm particularly pleased that the tree of the year is an oak", says Lübberdink at the symbolic planting ceremony on Arbor Day. "I have read that this species can live for around 400 years", says Lübberdink. He will look after the tree regularly, he announces.
His family, who will also be attending the symbolic planting on this day, will give him a small gift - an insect hotel - which will then be attached to the climbing aid.
About the tree of the year
As its name suggests, the American red oak (Quercus rubra) originates from the mixed deciduous forests of North America. It arrived in Europe around 300 years ago via France and was initially mainly planted in parks, botanical gardens and stately aleens, according to the website of the Dr Silvius Wodarz Foundation, which selects the "Tree of the Year" every year.
More information about the red oak can be found on the foundation's official website at: www.baum-des-jahres.de
