Reading competition: Next round for the fourth classes

Ten children from Bocholt and Rhede read at the catch-up date of the regional decision

On Saturday, March 26, 2022, the fourth-grade reading competition will enter the next round at the media center of the Bocholt Public Library. Ten students from the elementary schools have made it to the regional decision and will compete against each other to qualify for the district decision. Great prizes await the three best "bookworms".

Reading aloud is not only an important step in developing reading skills - the participants in the reading aloud competition also get the opportunity to present their favorite book at its best for once. Due to Corona, this year's regional decision for the fourth grades had to be moved from January to March. Next Saturday, the ten winners of the previous competitions will finally be able to demonstrate their skills.

A competition with fun, skill and fairness

The children read for three minutes from their prepared favorite text and, after a short break, two minutes from the foreign text, which is the same for everyone. In doing so, the children continue reading one after the other at the point where it was previously interrupted. "For us as the jury, it is always exciting to observe how the children react to a foreign text. After all, that's the trickiest part. But this also really creates a level playing field for everyone," says Klaudia Kroesen, librarian and jury member. Afterwards, the jury, consisting of representatives from local libraries, schools, media and the book trade, will deliberate on the winners according to predefined criteria.

Who will qualify for the district competition?

Six Bocholt elementary school students and four students from Rhede qualified for the regional decision this year. The best three will be honored by the deputy mayor Elisabeth Kroesen and will be able to prove their reading talent once again at the district decision in Borken and look forward to book vouchers.
The reading competition is an initiative of the Bildungskreis Borken with the kind support of the LionsClub Westmünsterland. The event takes place in compliance with 3G regulations.
