On Tuesday, 8 July, the city of Bocholt will be presenting the drama "Stonewall - where pride began" as part of the "The Special Film" series. In the film, the famous homosexual director Roland Emmerich tells an emotional and powerful story of identity conflicts, discrimination and violence. Only the courage of individuals made the beginning of the modern LGBTQ+ movement possible. The film is being presented in cooperation with "Bocholt Pride e.V.".
Danny Winters grows up in a village in Kansas and is thrown out by his parents because he is gay. He moves to New York, where he initially lives homeless on the streets without contact to friends or family members such as his sister Phoebe. A group of street kids lead him to the Stonewall Inn pub on Christopher Street, a meeting place for the LGBTQ+ scene. There, Danny meets people who, like him, do not conform to the heterosexual norm - including Ray, also known as Ramona, who wears women's clothing. In the midst of social tensions and political oppression, one night becomes a turning point and young Danny finds himself at the centre of a rebellion that makes history.
The film lasts 129 minutes. The film was directed by Roland Emmerich.

About the special film campaign
The film series "KINO Bocholt - the special film" has existed since 1977 as a cooperation between the Department of Education and Culture and Kinodrom Bocholt. The aim is to present exceptional films - which would otherwise not be shown in Bocholt - to an interested audience of all ages at a favourable price of €7. Selected films are usually shown every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month.
