FW Bocholt: Power cut following a transformer fire in Stenern
FW Bocholt (ots) -
The Bocholt Fire Brigade was called out at 1.14 pm on Wednesday, 17 June 2026, to a fire at a transformer station on Bernhard-Kampshoff-Weg. A local resident had reported to the control centre that smoke was coming from the substation and that the smell of burning was noticeable.
When the first emergency services arrived, thick, dark smoke was already billowing from the substation. This was a 10kV substation which steps down the voltage to 400V.
Due to the danger posed by the electrical voltage, no direct fire-fighting measures could be taken initially. The fire service therefore limited its efforts to safety measures and cooling the
facility from the outside.
Once staff from the relevant municipal utility company had de-energised and earthed the transformer station, a team wearing self-contained breathing apparatus was able to begin firefighting operations. The source of the fire was located in the low-voltage section of the transformer station and was quickly extinguished.
The municipal utility staff are currently working to restore the power supply in the affected area as quickly as possible.
No one was injured during the operation. The Bocholt Fire Brigade was on site with three vehicles and ten firefighters until around 14:30
. The operation was supported by the police and staff from the municipal utility company.
