850 square metres of space for the little ones // Inclusive sand playground
This week, the city of Bocholt is officially opening the extension to the playground in the Kubaai neighbourhood to the public. New play and recreational elements have been created on around 850 additional square metres, supplementing the facilities for small children in particular. A particular focus of the project was the inclusive usability of the new facilities.
The city of Bocholt is expanding the existing play area in the Kubaai neighbourhood in order to meet the high daily demand from residents and visitors. The newly completed area covers around 850 square metres and its design reflects the industrial history of the site.
The centrepiece of the extension is a custom-made, inclusive sand construction site, which was designed as a workshop with an industrial roof. This element enables children with and without disabilities to play together and thus promotes participation on the site.
In addition to the sand construction site, a versatile swing combination was installed, which is equipped with a nest swing, a standard swing seat and a special seat for small children. A new sand excavator complements the play options in the sand area.
The existing climbing tower has also been upgraded by adding a tube slide. Two new bench-table combinations and additional seating elements have been integrated into the area to increase the quality of stay for families and accompanying persons.
"It is very important to us as the city of Bocholt that our play areas are places of encounter for everyone", says Pia Lammers from the Department of Schools and Sport. "We have created an inclusive sandpit here that is barrier-free and can be used by all children", says Lammers.
Since its creation, the playground in the Kubaai neighbourhood has developed into a central meeting point that is appreciated far beyond the boundaries of the neighbourhood. With the recent expansion, the city of Bocholt is closing a gap in the offer for the youngest citizens and creating an attractive meeting place for all generations.
Slide tower currently still closed
Despite its opening this week, the climbing tower with slide will remain closed for a few more days. This is due to wilful damage, which must first be repaired. The replacement part has already been ordered and will be installed as soon as it is delivered.
