Cycle tour "Against Forgetting" to the Rademakersbroek memorial site
Cross-border cycle tour on 31 May 2026 from 10 a.m. // Cooperation event between the "Bocholts Werte bewahren" interest group, the Onderduikmuseum Aalten and EUROPE DIRECT Bocholt
A bicycle tour on 31 May will commemorate the horrors of the National Socialist era and highlight the importance of European values during the European month of May. This is a joint event organised by "Preserving Bocholt's Values" with the Onderduikmuseum Aalten and EUROPE DIRECT Bocholt.
The tour starts in Bocholt and leads via the Nationaal Onderduikmuseum in Aalten to the Rademakersbroek memorial and back. Departure is at 10 a.m. from the car park at the TuS Stenern sports ground, Hemdener Weg 165. Two special places are on the programme: the Nationaal Onderduikmuseum in Aalten and the Rademakersbroek memorial near Varsseveld. After a drink at the Onderduikmuseum, the guided tour to the memorial and back to the museum begins. Afterwards, participants can chat over a snack.
The Nationaal Onderduikmuseum
The museum is an impressive reminder of the fate of those who went into hiding during the Second World War. It shows courage, solidarity and human responsibility - and reminds us to actively defend freedom and civil courage even today. It thus indirectly draws attention to European values such as freedom, respect for human rights and the rule of law.
Significance of the Rademakersbroek memorial
On 2 March 1945, shortly before the end of the war, 46 Dutchmen were shot at this site by soldiers of the German Wehrmacht. The victims were taken from a prison in Doetinchem. The execution was in retaliation for an action by the resistance group "De Bark", who killed four German soldiers at the end of February 1945.
Registration
Interested parties can register by emailing heinerwolters(at)gmx(dot)de. The participation fee of 15 euros includes admission to the Onderduikmuseum and the guided tour to the Rademakersbroek memorial, a drink and a snack after the tour in the Onderduikmuseum.
