How does the German Parliament work, and what are the duties of its Members? Answers to these questions are provided by the German Bundestag's newly designed travelling exhibition, which will be on display at the Hohe-Giethorst-Schule in Bocholt from Monday 14 September to Friday 18 September 2026. The exhibition, which is open to the public, is aimed at all citizens and, in particular, at school groups.
On the initiative of Nadine Heselhaus (SPD), a Member of the Bundestag, the German Bundestag's travelling exhibition is stopping off in Bocholt. The Hohe-Giethorst School at Büningweg 29 will be opening its doors to interested visitors from 14 to 18 September 2026. The exhibition was completely redesigned in 2023 and aims to bring the role and workings of the national parliament to life directly in the constituencies.
"Democracy thrives on an understanding of its processes and institutions", says Bocholt's First Deputy Mayor, Björn Volmering, expressing his delight at the exhibition, ""The fact that the Bundestag is now hosting a modern, multimedia exhibition in Bocholt offers an excellent opportunity to get to know parliamentary processes at first hand.""
The exhibition makes use of contemporary, digital educational formats. Sixteen display boards and ten monitors showing visual presentations clearly illustrate key aspects of parliamentarianism and democracy. Using their own smartphones and an augmented reality app, visitors can take a virtual tour of the plenary chamber in Berlin's Reichstag building. The smartphone also serves as an interactive guide, offering additional opportunities to explore the subject in greater depth, which can also be accessed later from home. The exhibition is complemented by a central cube and a touch table.
There is a particular focus on activities for young people. School groups have the opportunity to explore the exhibition as part of a visit and take part in a moderated discussion session about Parliament. These sessions are led by volunteers from the Bundestag. Entertainment is provided, amongst other things, by a photo wall featuring Bundestag motifs and a knowledge quiz with small prizes.
Teachers wishing to bring their classes can register in advance by emailing bundestag.mobil(at)bundestag(dot)de with their preferred date. The travelling exhibition is open on Mondays from 12.00 to 16.00. From Tuesday to Thursday, visitors can view the exhibition between 8.00 am and 3.00 pm; on Friday, it is open from 8.00 am to 2.00 pm. In addition to the exhibits, comprehensive information material is available, which can also be ordered free of charge via the Bundestag's online shop if required.
