50 years of Mother's Day concert - music school celebrates emotional anniversary with grand orchestral finale

Anniversary concert in the Euregiohalle // Performances by various orchestras // Reunion of former musicians

Last Sunday, the Bocholt-Isselburg Music School celebrated the 50th anniversary of its traditional Mother's Day concert with a festive event in the sports hall of the Euregiogymnasium. In front of numerous guests, current and former musicians presented a challenging programme spanning five decades of orchestral work. The emotional highlight was a joint finale by all the participating ensembles.

Deputy Mayor Gudrun Koppers opened the anniversary event with a welcoming address in which she emphasised the importance of the concert for the cultural life of the city of Bocholt over the decades. She honoured the commitment of the music school, which has created a fixed point of reference for many families with this tradition.

The opening performance by the Mini-Winds under the direction of Gido van Schijndel created a great atmosphere. With energetic titles such as "3C Rock", "Pirates of the Caribbean", "Counting Stars" and the classic "Smoke on the Water", the young musicians impressively demonstrated their skills. A special moment was provided by "Bella Ciao", conducted by Michael Meldrum with Jakob Huels as soloist.

The wind band under the direction of Ruben van Schijndel then presented a varied programme of symphonic wind music and film music. Works such as "Leuchtfeuer", "Antonin's New World" and "Music from Les Misérables" delighted the audience, as did the modern "Coldplay Classics".

The youth wind orchestra under the direction of Gido van Schijndel set further musical highlights with powerful and emotional works. Pieces such as "The Show Must Go On", "Lord Tullamore" and "Don't Stop Believin'" provided rousing concert moments, while "Remembrance Day" set a particularly impressive and calm accent.

A special highlight of the anniversary concert was the (G)Oldfingers project wind orchestra, which was specially formed by former musicians from the music school. Under the direction of Bodo Biermann, the ensemble impressively presented the musical bond between many generations with "Fate of the Gods", "Moment for Morricone", the "Rocky" classic "Gonna Fly Now" and a Grönemeyer medley.

The moment when Klaus Helfen, the inventor of the Mother's Day concert", returned to the stage himself to conduct the orchestra for "Moment for Morricone" was particularly moving. The audience honoured this special moment with great applause. The participation of other former conductors of the wind orchestras, Michael Meldum, Guido Schrader and Winfried Waschk, also made the concert a special reunion.

At the end of the morning, all the participating orchestras came together to form an impressive ensemble. "Today's anniversary is impressive proof of how the music school has been connecting people and keeping traditions alive for more than five decades", music school director Claudia Borgers was delighted with the successful concert, "it was a special experience to see so many generations of former and active musicians together on stage."
