Crane erection at the theatre: Berliner Platz fully closed on 15 January

On Thursday, 15 January 2026, Berliner Platz will be completely closed to traffic and the public for the entire day. The reason for this is the erection of a construction crane for work on the backstage of the municipal theatre. The necessary crane components will be delivered on this day by several heavy goods vehicles.

As part of the renovation work on the town hall and theatre, the next construction phases will begin in mid-January, which will be accompanied by visible changes in the construction site area. A widely recognisable part of this is the assembly of a large tower crane, which will be needed for the upcoming further work in the backstage area, for placing the gravel in the river Aa and for the roofing work that is due to begin shortly. As the crane elements will be delivered by several heavy goods vehicles, the entire area of Berliner Platz will be needed on 15 January for the logistics and manoeuvring of the vehicles as well as for the assembly of the 60-metre-long crane jib. Citizens and all road users are asked to use the surrounding car parks on Thursday.

Parallel to these measures, the construction site monitoring systems will be installed in January. Preparations are also underway for the construction of the necessary construction road in the Aa. The exact start date for this work is currently being finalised in order to ensure that the logistics on the site run smoothly.
