CITY CYCLING: Bocholt pedals to the "Mission title defence"

From 1 to 21 May 2026, the aim is to collect as many kilometres as possible // Register now

Last year, over 3,000 Bocholters cycled almost 746,000 kilometres in three weeks. That was a record figure. What's more: "It was an impressive sign of sustainable mobility", says Sascha Terörde from the City of Bocholt's Climate Protection Department. "Bocholt confirmed its position as a bicycle-active city with a role model character."

Mayor Christian Mangen is also enthusiastic: "We are not just the cycling city, we are the defending champion. Last year, we showed what we're made of in the city cycling competition and brought victory in our size category to Bocholt. That was an amazing team effort! " Bocholt is once again relying on broad support from the population to ensure that this remains the case this year. Citizens as well as local schools, companies, clubs and groups can take part. Every kilometre ridden counts - whether on the way to work, on errands, at school or in your free time.

Bocholt has been recognised as a bicycle-friendly and active city for years. Short distances, many cycle paths and cycle lanes often make cycling faster than travelling by car in everyday life. What's more, people who cycle protect the climate, stay fit and experience their city directly. "In Bocholt, the bicycle is the number one means of transport - and city cycling is the perfect stage to prove this", says city planning officer Dave Welling, "every kilometre that we track together saves CO2 and is a strong signal for our modern, climate-friendly mobility", the city planning officer is looking forward to hopefully full cycle paths in May.

Bicycle-related topics also play an important role for the Bocholt city brand and urban society. "Biking is part of Bocholt's DNA. What we had long suspected, we have also had in black and white since 2024 in a representative survey", says Karsten Tersteegen, city brand representative of the business development and city marketing company. "Bocholt loves the Fietse!"

There are also incentives to take part this year. The city of Bocholt and the business development organisation are giving away prizes among the participants. These include high-quality bicycle accessories and vouchers for the water and sauna world at Bahia Bocholt. "We are once again hoping for many participants who will pedal hard for Bocholt and the region", explain Terörde and Tersteegen as local CITY CYCLING coordinators.

How the registration works

Participation is easy. Anyone who wants to take part can find more information at www.bocholt.de/stadtradeln or can register online in just a few minutes on the nationwide portal www.stadtradeln.de and enter the kilometres they have cycled during the campaign period from 1 to 21 May. It is possible to join teams and compete against each other in groups as a challenge.

For less digital Bocholters, lists will be made available on the City of Bocholt's homepage, but also at the Tourist Information Centre for manual registration, which can then be submitted to the city administration or the city marketing department.

Information and the lists for city cycling in Bocholt are available on the city's website www.bocholt.de/stadtradeln.
