30 km/h in the area of the Israhel-van-Meckenem secondary school

In the area surrounding the Israhel-van-Meckenem-Realschule (IVM), a speed limit of 30 km/h will apply in future to protect pupils. The regulation will come into force shortly and will apply from Monday to Friday between 7am and 5pm. This is based on new legal options in the road traffic regulations.

The city of Bocholt is thus implementing measures to increase road safety on highly frequented school routes. Specifically, the new regulation covers Münsterstraße between the junction with Roonstraße and the junction with Blücherstraße. The new regulation also applies to the road areas Am Kreuzberg and Blücherstraße in the section between Viktoriastraße and the junction with Münsterstraße. In these areas, the corresponding signage will be arranged and installed promptly in order to slow down vehicle traffic during the times relevant to school operations.

This was preceded by a detailed examination of the traffic situation on site. The city council is utilising the leeway created by the recent amendment to the German Road Traffic Regulations (StVO). The change in the law makes it easier for local authorities to impose a 30 km/h speed limit in the immediate vicinity of schools and on heavily used school routes in order to minimise the risk of accidents.

"The safety of pupils has absolute priority on their daily journey to school", explains City Councillor Dave Welling, "with the new regulation, we are making consistent use of the legal possibilities to minimise danger points."
