Suderwick celebrates "60 years of reunification

Public ceremony with programme on 1 August together with Dutch neighbours

The Bocholt district of Suderwick will be celebrating on 1 August with a varied programme. The occasion is the reunification of the districts separated in 1949 with the main part of the town. Dutch and German citizens will take part in the festivities together. They symbolise "Europe on the spot", comments Sonja Wießmeier from EUROPE DIRECT Bocholt.

Historical background

1 August 2023 marks the 60th anniversary of areas that were placed under Dutch contract administration after World War 2 in 1949 becoming German again. Specifically, this concerns Suderwick-West. Suderwick and Dinxperlo associations will jointly commemorate the "reunification" with various activities and a German-Dutch "Naoberfest" (German: neighbourhood festival). The celebration will take place around the St. Michael's Church; all those interested are welcome.

Programme

14:45 - 15:15: Unveiling of the historical border post with information board at the path "Tenbensel 2

14:30 - 15:30: Social coffee with contemporary witnesses and guests

15:30 - 17:00: Round table discussion with contemporary witnesses and interested people: "What was it like, once the Netherlands and back?"

17:00 - 18:00: "Borrelzeit" with the trek bag group "De Spölluu

from 18:00: Noaberfest Suderwick - Dinxperlo with music

At 6 pm "De Götekapelle" and at 7 pm the "Dinxpers Smartlappenkoor" will perform. All events will take place in Suderwick at the St. Michael's Church and at the Michaelstreff. One exception is the "unveiling of the border post".

For children

There will be a play afternoon for children from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Michaelstreff in Suderwick with the theme "Water knows no borders".

EUROPE DIRECT Bocholt

The EUROPE DIRECT Bocholt is part of the office of the mayor of the city of Bocholt and is the local contact point for questions and commitment concerning the European Union. Its task is to provide local citizens with information, advice, help and answers to questions about Europe, to promote involvement and to inform them about current events in European politics.
