The special film "Surf on, Europe!"

Extraordinary documentary film on Tuesday, 27 May 2025 // 8 pm at the Kinodrom // Admission 7 euros

On 27 May, the city of Bocholt will be presenting a documentary about three surfing enthusiasts in the "The Special Film" series, which impressively highlights the social and political challenges in modern Europe. The "EUROPE DIRECT Bocholt" is a co-operation partner and offers the opportunity for a discussion afterwards if interested.

Rosy lives in Derry (Northern Ireland) and travels across the nearby border to the Republic of Ireland to surf. As a teenager, only his passion for surfing saved him from being caught up in the violence of the Northern Ireland conflict. Now he wants to make a living building surfboards. But it's not easy - he's struggling with the economic and political uncertainty caused by Brexit.

In Biarritz (France), Margaux and her friends get together to organise Europe's first LGBTQ-friendly surf festival. "The sea doesn't discriminate against anyone", they say, and want to counter the stereotypes of the commercial surfing scene.

In Tarifa (Spain), Majid teaches kitesurfing. He longs to bring his wife and their two children from Morocco to join him. However, he struggles against the constraints of Spanish bureaucracy to realise his dream alongside his family.

Over four years of production time have resulted in a film that blurs the boundaries between surf film and socially critical documentary and combines aesthetic imagery with raw, documentary insights into the lives of the protagonists.

The film lasts 92 minutes and will be shown in the original version with German subtitles. The film was directed by Constantin Gross and Lukas Steinbrecher. The trailer and tickets are available at Kinodrom.de.

About the special film campaign
The film series "KINO Bocholt - der besondere Film" has been running since 1977 as a cooperation between the Department of Education and Culture and Kinodrom Bocholt. The aim is to present exceptional films - which would otherwise not be shown in Bocholt - to an interested audience of all ages at a favourable price of €7. As a rule, selected films are shown every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month.
