Evening guided tour of Grieth with a kale dinner

VHS excursion on 30 October // A walk through historic alleyways to Grieth Castle // Hanseatic feast at the Hanselädchen included // Bookings now open

The VHS Bocholt-Rhede-Isselburg invites you to an evening guided tour of the historic Hanseatic town of Grieth on the Rhine on Friday, 30 October. Ausscheller Piepe Jan will lead the group through the narrow streets and along the Rhine promenade with his traditional bell. To round off the evening, there will be kale with Mettwurst at the Griether Hanselädchen.

The event is entitled "Extraschicht! - Evening guided tour of the Hanseatic town of Grieth on the Rhine" and takes place from 4.30 pm to 7 pm. The meeting point is the Hanselädchen at Griether Markt 28 in Kalkar-Grieth.

Grieth is considered the northernmost town on the left bank of the Rhine before the Dutch border. In autumn, this little Hanseatic town takes on a particularly atmospheric charm. For the town crier, Piepe Jan, this is reason enough to put in an extra shift in the evening too. Accompanied by the ringing of his local bell, he leads participants through the streets of Grieth, past the Gothic basilica and along the Rhine promenade to Grieth Castle. Along the way, he recounts the town's glorious past, as well as darker and more bizarre episodes from its history.

The focus is on life on, with and from the Rhine. For centuries, the river has shaped everyday life in this former customs town. At times it brought great prosperity to the residents; at others, danger, hardship and misery.

After the tour, the group stops off at the Griether Hanselädchen. There, a hearty Hanseatic feast of kale and Mettwurst awaits.

The excursion is led by Wilhelm Miesen. He is a Lower Rhine guide and a certified nature and landscape guide.

The participation fee is 24.50 euros. This includes the Hanseatic feast; drinks are charged separately. Further information and registration details are available online at vhs.bocholt.de and at the VHS office in the LernWerk.
