The special film "Niki de Saint Phalle"
As part of the series "The Special Film", the city of Bocholt is presenting the biographical film about the artist "Niki de Saint Phalle" with Charlotte Le Bon in the leading role. The film is a plea for the fighting spirit of this remarkable woman and for the irrepressible power of art.
The social and political climate in the USA during the McCarthy era prompted the artist Niki de Saint Phalle to move to France with her husband Harry Matthews and their daughter. But even in Europe, she is haunted by the ghosts of her past. The artist was abused by her father as a child.
Instead of leading a glamorous life as a model and actress in Paris, Niki soon breaks down and seeks psychiatric help. In the process, she discovers visual art for herself and begins to challenge the existing conventions of this world. The film sheds light on the role of art in helping her deal with her psychological stress. The so-called "Nanas" are her artistic trademark.
The film lasts 100 minutes. The film was directed by Celine Sallette.
