City library supports health project // 970 euros from media sales handed over
The Bocholt City Library's autumn book flea market was not only a success for reading enthusiasts, but now also benefits a charitable cause. On 16 December, city officials handed over the collected proceeds of 970 euros to the Bocholt sleep apnoea self-help group. The donation supports the important work and education around the topic of sleep health.
On Tuesday, representatives of the city council and the self-help group met to officially hand over the donation. First City Councillor Björn Volmering and the Head of the Department of Culture and Education, Jule Wanders, attended the event together with Melanie Tenhumberg, Head of the City Library. The amount was accepted by the board of the self-help group Schlafapnoe Bocholt, represented by the first chairman Robert Dunkerbeck, the second chairman Dirk Hendriks and treasurer Roland Kolks.
The handover of the donation was preceded by the traditional autumn book flea market, which took place in the entrance hall of the city library as part of the holiday programme from 13 to 24 October. During the two-week programme, many interested members of the public took the opportunity to browse through the library's discarded stock. For a voluntary donation, well-preserved novels, non-fiction books, children's and youth literature, CDs and DVDs could be purchased. The great willingness of the Bocholt population to give the media a second life made the donation possible.
The city library regularly combines reading promotion with social commitment with such campaigns. Melanie Tenhumberg from the city library was delighted with the successful conclusion of the campaign. "We are very pleased that we were able to make a contribution to such an important local health group by selling used media", said Tenhumberg on the sidelines of the handover, "every donation shows how positive the circulation and passing on of media can be."
The self-help group for sleep apnoea in Bocholt regularly organises meetings to provide those affected with a space for exchange, information and mutual support. The donation will be used for information material, lectures and to strengthen the local self-help programme.
