The special film "The Boy and the Heron"
Twelve-year-old Mahito loses his mother in an air raid on Tokyo. When his father marries his late wife's younger sister and moves with his family to the countryside, a difficult time begins for Mahito. A talking grey heron reveals to him that his mother is still alive. A magical journey begins. This Oscar-winning, iconic Japanese animated film is presented in collaboration with VHS Bocholt.
Soon he discovers a mysterious tower and a talking grey heron, who, to his surprise, tells him that his mother is still alive and is being held captive in the strange structure. When his stepmother also goes missing, Mahito sets off for the mysterious tower and finds himself in a magical world full of fantastical creatures and dangers. Many challenges await Mahito on his quest, which is also the path to his destiny.
This masterpiece of Japanese anime runs for 125 minutes and was directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

The film series "KINO Bocholt - the special film" has been running since 1977 as a collaboration between the Department of Education and Culture of the City of Bocholt and the Kinodrom Bocholt. The aim is to make exceptional films, which would not otherwise feature in the regular programme, accessible to a wide audience. Selected productions are usually screened on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. Admission is €7.
