The special film "Lolita reading in Tehran"

As part of the "KINO Bocholt - the special film" series, the drama "Lolita lesen in Teheran" will be shown on Tuesday, 12 May 2026. The film by director Eran Riklis is a plea for freedom of the mind - and at the same time a quiet protest against a regime that suppresses education and female self-determination. Since the mullahs came to power, almost all forms of artistic expression have been restricted in Iran: Music, theatre, painting - and even literature. Women are not allowed to sing in public and have to cover their hair. The film starts at 8 pm in the Kinodrom.

In Tehran in the 1990s, after the revolution, literature professor Azar Nafisi undertakes a silent act of resistance: she secretly gathers six of her female students in her flat for a private reading circle. Together, they immerse themselves in the banned works of Western literature - from Vladimir Nabokov to F. Scott Fitzgerald, Henry James and Jane Austen. In the midst of political oppression and religious control, reading becomes an act of self-empowerment that inspires the women to reflect on freedom, love and identity.

The film lasts 108 minutes.

The film series "KINO Bocholt - the special film" has existed since 1977 as a cooperation between the Department of Education and Culture of the City of Bocholt and Kinodrom Bocholt. The aim is to make unusual films that are not otherwise shown in the regular programme accessible to a wide audience. As a rule, selected productions are shown every second and fourth Tuesday of the month. Admission is €7.
