The special film "A cake for the president"

Iraq in the 90s. While dictator Saddam Hussein celebrates his birthday across the country despite hardship and shortages, nine-year-old Lamia draws the dreaded straw at her school. She has to bake the cake for the local celebrations. It is an almost impossible task, as there is a shortage of food in the country. Eggs, sugar and flour are impossible to get hold of. She has to make it or her family will face severe penalties.

With just two days to spare, the support of her classmate Saeed and accompanied by her rooster Hindi, she sets off to find the ingredients in the nearest town. It is an adventurous quest through a world full of uncertainty and hardship, but also small miracles, in which Lamia experiences moments of humour, friendship and hope time and again.

Baking a cake for the president while the country is starving? From this simple premise, writer and director Hasan Hadi develops a moving and bittersweet adventure film in which childlike innocence meets the harsh reality of an oppressed country. And in which humanity repeatedly wins small but decisive victories.
The director processes his own childhood in the beguilingly beautiful marshlands of southern Iraq. He tells the story of little Lamia with an all-amateur ensemble, in which the little leading lady towers above everyone else.

The film lasts 105 minutes. The film was directed by Hasan Hadi.

The film series "KINO Bocholt - the special film" has existed since 1977 as a cooperation between the Department of Education and Culture of the City of Bocholt and Kinodrom Bocholt. The aim is to make unusual films that are not otherwise shown in the regular programme accessible to a wide audience. As a rule, selected productions are shown every second and fourth Tuesday of the month. Admission is €7.
