KANAREN - Seven at one stroke

André Schumacher is another new VHS discovery. Just over a year ago, he made his first guest appearance in Bocholt during a tour with "Wild Europe". It was not for nothing that we immediately extended another invitation to him. His Canary Islands travel show will also deal with the realisation of dreams, comfort zones and borderline experiences with plenty of humour, wonderful images and original effects.

Africa, Asia, South America, Antarctica - André Schumacher has travelled everywhere. Homeless. Intoxicated. For 20 years. Addicted to faraway places, people, stories. He has now been trying to settle down for 14 years. In vain. This time, the globetrotter wanders through the Canary archipelago from Lanzarote to El Hierro, the former end of the western world. In his award-winning film and photo show, he recounts the funniest stories, curious discoveries and hair-raising moments.

More than beach and sun

Everyone knows the Canary Islands: holidays, summer, sunshine - crowded beaches. More than 10 million tourists travel to the islands of eternal spring every year, but usually only see the edge of their swimming pool. Others don't even find their way to the archipelago: alternative tourists, backpackers and nature lovers are more likely to be drawn to Scandinavia, Patagonia or New Zealand - to places where the landscape is still wild and the people are genuine. A big mistake! René Schumacher discovered this on a six-month hiking trip: In truth, the Canary Islands are completely different from what most of us believe. You can save yourself a trip to the moon, for example. Likewise excursions to the primeval forests of Costa Rica or the vastness of the Sahara.

Great cinema

A story about life and passion - with strange moments and sometimes hair-raising encounters that raise curious questions: Does cucumber beer really increase libido? What to do with a motorway tunnel given as a present? And what do six musicians who only have seven teeth between them actually sound like? You can look forward to an extraordinary show presented on a large screen - a mixture of high-class photo impressions, videos, time-lapse recordings and animated cartoons - and lots of fun!

Our speaker

André Schumacher, born in 1974 in Rostock, studied architecture in Potsdam and later fine art, design and philosophy at the College of Art in Edinburgh. After three years as a freelance architect on the Canary Islands, he gave up his job, quit his flat and travelled through South America by bike for several years. Since then, he has worked as a photographer and storyteller. When he is not travelling, he lives in the small Mecklenburg village of Bäbelin on his Kunterbunthof farm

André Schumacher is a member of the renowned photo and reportage agency laif. His photos appear in DIE ZEIT and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, among others. He reports on his travel adventures with a great deal of humour in elaborately produced film and photo shows. (more at www.poletopole.de)
