Memories of the Lichtburg
Anyone who, on seeing this magnificent building, spontaneously thinks that this is the historical view of the manor house in Märkisch-Wilmersdorf (Brandenburg), part of Kittendorf Castle (Mecklenburg Lake District) or a posh estate in the English provinces is mistaken.
The title of the popular city archive series "Photo of the Month" can be taken literally when looking at the picture. For in this issue, the object reproduced is only marginally discussed. This time, the focus of the discussion is on the image carrier itself: the photographic image.
"Whoever wants to hike with joy, go towards the sun" - these lines from an old folk song could have been the reason for six young people from Bocholt to found the Bocholt Hiking Association in September 1913. A love of nature, exercise in the fresh air and exploring the sights in the respective region were further motives of the hiking enthusiasts more than 100 years ago.
In 2021, the photo series reported on Nordstraße as it appeared to the viewer in the inner city circle around 1910. The Historical Photo of the Month August 2022 is dedicated to a section of the street further north, the picture of which was taken a few decades later, in 1965.
What was that building opposite the new fire station on Dingdener Straße that was demolished two years after a roof fire in 2019? "... I was a guest there recently", the former newspaper editor Josef Stanik reported more than 60 years ago...
In 1936/37, the city of Bocholt built a new cemetery chapel and mortuary with access on Blücherstraße according to the plans of its structural engineering department. This was not only done in the course of the general enlargement of the municipal cemetery itself.
The historical photo of the month, presented every month by the Bocholt city archive, shows the four-storey brick building of Rudolph Karstadt AG in April 2022.
About the photo of the monthThe Photo of the Month is presented once a month by the Bocholt Municipal Archives. The texts accompanying the picture are written by Wolfgang Tembrink.
